William Sedgwick (bishop)
The Rt Rev William Walmsley Sedgwick (1858–1948〔(NZetc )〕) was the 5th Anglican Bishop of Waiapu whose Episcopate spanned a 15-year period during the first half of the 20th century.
Born at Freemantle in Southampton,〔(British Sedgwick Genealogy )〕 William Sedgwick was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge〔''University Intelligence. Cambridge, 15 Dec.'' The Times Friday, 16 Dec 1881; pg. 4; Issue 30379; col D〕 and ordained in 1882.〔The Times, Tuesday, 26 Sep 1882; pg. 7; Issue 30622; col C Ordinations Canterbury〕 He embarked on his career with a curacy at St. John The Baptist, Wateringbury and a short spell as a Naval Chaplain.〔“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 Later he held incumbencies in Hockley Heath, Vryburg and Bedford, Eastern Cape. From 1897 to 1900 he was Chaplain to the Earl of Home〔”Scottish Episcopal Clergy, 1689-2000” Bertie, D.M: Edinburgh T & T Clark ISBN 0-567-08746-8〕 and between 1900 and 1914 he worked in New Zealand,〔(St Lukes in the City )〕 eventually becoming Bishop of Waiapu.
